Minnesota’s Opening Fishing Weekend Has Arrived!

We’re ready to kick off open water fishing on Lake of the Woods!

One of your favorite guides, Captain Tim “Wingnut” Hill, has some advice for the opener. Hill says, “The opener should be one of the best. Water temperatures will continue to rise in the next few weeks. Jigging is the preferred method of fishing, tipped with a frozen shiner, live bait or even plastic bait. Slow presentation is best.

Depths will depend on where you can locate the fish. I start 25’ to 30’ off the reefs. The shoreline can also hold fish; 6’ is a good starting point. Spinners with minnows or plastics work well.

The opener is fun. Fish haven’t been caught since March and it’s an exciting challenge to find where they’re at. I catch more big fish in the first two weeks of the season than any other time. Best of luck out there!”
